Family Health

 

Prenatal Education Classes: Prenatal education classes for expectant parents.  See calendar of events for class schedules.

 

Maternal and Child Health Home Visiting:  Prenatal education and counseling to high risk, low income pregnant women in order to prevent complications with pregnancy and improve birth outcomes.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC): Supplemental food program for eligible pregnant, breastfeeding women; infants and children under age 5 with a strong nutritional and educational component.

Healthy Beginnings: Home visit to all mothers and their newborns to provide health education, screening, resource and referral.  

Follow-Along Program: Computerized tracking system to help identify delays in infant/child growth and development through written questionnaires that are mailed out to targeted families.  Emphasis is on early identification and appropriate referral.

Child and Teen Check-Up: Comprehensive health screening for eligible children up to the age of 21.  This program provides preventative medical care and early diagnosis and treatment of conditions that threaten children's health.

School Health:  Mower County Public Health offers comprehensive school health services to select schools in Mower County.  Nursing services include health screenings, first aide, medication management, immunization record management, health education and maintenance of student health records.

Child Passenger Safety Seat Program Public Health Nurses certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association provide education and training, with return demonstration, to parents on how to properly install child passenger seats and secure infants and children in them.  See calendar of events for schedule of clinics.

Children's Dental Health Services:  Dental screenings and treatments by a Dental Hygienist.  Treatments include: cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, and sealants when applicable.  Accepting children up to age 14 who are receiving medical assistance.

Family Planning

Open Door Clinic: The Open Door Clinic provides education, counseling, and medical family planning services for at risk, low income men and women with the purpose of promoting health and preventing unintended pregnancies.  Clinics are held the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM by appointment only.  Call (507) 437-9770 during regular business hours to schedule an appointment.

Minnesota Family Planning Project:  The Minnesota Family Planning Program is a health care program that covers family planning services and related supplies.  For more information or to apply call Mower County Public Health at (507) 437-9770 or visit the MFPP website www.dhs.state.mn.us/familyplanning

DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL

Immunization Clinics: Public immunization clinics are held every Friday from 3:15 PM - 4:30 PM.  There is a fee of $14 per dose.  No appointment is necessary.

Lead Program:  Mower County Public Health offers education, counseling, information and referral to reduce or prevent exposure to sources of lead, especially in young children.

DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL

 

Refugee Health : Health and immunization records are reviewed. Tuberculosis screening is completed. Appropriate referrals and follow up is completed for all refugees settling in Mower County.

Communicable Disease Outbreak Investigation and Follow-Up: Investigate outbreaks of communicable disease in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Health. Provide follow up, as appropriate, to limit extent of outbreak.

 

Public Health Preparedness Coordination of local, state and national planning and preparation to act in the event of a bioterrorism or other public health threat.  It involves working with local emergency management agencies and other community support agencies.

HEALTH PROMOTION

Blood Pressure Clinics: Held at numerous sites throughout the county. All are open to the public. See Calendar of Events for locations.

ADULT HEALTH

Minnesota Senior Health Options (MSHO): Care Coordination for persons over age 65 on Medicare and Medicaid in Mower County.  Care Coordinators set up a plan of care that incorporates medical care, nursing home care, pharmacy services and community resources for seniors.
