Guardianship is when a court appoints an individual or entity to make personal, health care, and/or financial decisions for an individual who has been found to no longer be able to make decisions for themselves.
Guardianship is considered a last resort as it removes an individual’s basic rights including but not limited to voting, making medical decisions, signing documents, getting married, and managing assets.
Due to guardianships being so restrictive, Mower County Courts follow state law encouragement to use less restrictive alternatives first to help support someone needing assisting in decision making.
