What are Spring Load Restrictions?
Each year during the spring thaw, typically from early March through mid May, Mower County, along with state and local agencies, imposes temporary axle weight restrictions on designated roadways. These restrictions help protect the significant public investment in the county transportation system.
Bituminous pavements are most vulnerable during the spring thaw. As frost leaves the ground, moisture remains in the gravel base and underlying soils. This elevated moisture content reduces the strength of the subgrade and decreases the pavement’s ability to carry heavy loads. Weather conditions and traffic loading are the two primary contributors to premature pavement deterioration, and the spring thaw period presents the highest risk for damage.
To preserve roadway integrity and extend pavement service life, axle weight limits are temporarily reduced during this critical period each year.
How long are Spring Load Restrictions in effect?
The duration of Spring Load Restrictions varies annually based on frost depth, temperature, and overall weather conditions, but they typically remain in place for approximately eight weeks. Mower County follows the seasonal load restriction start and end dates established by Minnesota Department of Transportation as guidance for implementation on the county highway system.
