Local Option Sales Tax for Transportation

Proceeds from a ½-cent local option transit sales and use tax, approved by the Mower County Board of Commissioners, went into effect on January 1, 2018 and help fund critical transportation improvements throughout Mower County. This tax supports needed road, bridge, and other transportation-related projects, as identified in the county’s 10-year Transportation Improvement Plan.

The tax applies to retail sales made within Mower County. Like other Minnesota local sales taxes, certain basic necessities such as most food, clothing, prescription drugs, and motor vehicles are excluded from this tax in accordance with state law.

Funds collected are used for road, bridge and other transportation improvements that are identified in the county's 10-year Transportation Improvement Plan.

A public hearing will be held on March 24, 2026 at 10:00 AM in the Board Room at the Mower County Government Center, 201 1st St NE, Austin MN, to consider revising the 10-year Transportation Improvement Plan and extending the local option sales tax.
